In 1981, Citroën decided to take on the World Rally Championship. Unfortunately, the Renault 5 Turbo had already arrived and was dominating everything else on the field. To beat Renault, Citroën got in touch with Lotus to co-develop a car. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was a Visa hatchback body plopped on top of a Turbo Esprit engine and chassis.

It had 210hp and would have been more than a match for the R5. Unfortunately, testing revealed that the car was not sturdy enough to survive the rigors of the WRC. That combined with the debut of the all-conquering Audi Quattro resulted in the project being shelved. The car now resides in the Citroën Conservatoire Heritage Center, adjacent to the PSA factory just outside Paris.

That didn’t stop people going rallying in a Visa though.
